
DeWitt first performed on stage at the age of 13. She graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree at Ball State University. The director encouraged her to apply for UCLA's Department of Theater MFA program. The program awarded her the Master of Fine Arts Fellowship and the Clifton Webb Scholarship. While at UCLA she worked as a secretary, completing her first appearance on television on an episode of Baretta.Contrary to rumors that she was guided by actor Abe Vigoda, Dewitt has declared that the two actors never did meet. DeWitt is most well-known for her performance in the show Three's Co.'s run between 1977 and 1984 as Janet Wood. This was one of the roles she was offered after being selected for the second pilot. She also portrayed Janet in a 1979 episode of the spinoff show The Ropers. DeWitt was the only actor to be featured in the show's 1984 finale. Then, she appeared in an episode of Finder of Lost Lovers in 1984. Following that she was off acting for many years. She returned to acting, taking an appearance in a production of Noises Off at Michigan's Cherry County Playhouse in June 1991. In the following year, she appeared in the 1995 TV comedy film Spring Fling! Pinky and the Brain aired in 1997, and featured a character based on her. The character was voiced in part by another actress. She was featured in an episode of Cybill as well as an appearance in the penultimate episode of Living Single. Six of her TV shows of the 2000s included Hope Island and The Nick at Nite Holiday Special as in addition to Call of the Wild.
